Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is considered one of the oldest recognizable breeds of dog--dating back at least two thousand years to the Han Dynasty in China. In ancient times, Chow Chows were used as hunting, herding, and pulling dogs, as well as for protection.  Today, they are popular pets and guard dogs.  They are probably descended from Spitz dogs, and they are distinguished as one of only two dog breeds to possess a blue-black tongue.

Breed Category

Non-Sporting Dog

Temperament

Chows are loyal dogs and are often aloof with strangers, but they respond well to firm, gentle handling.  They are intelligent and independent.

Appearance

Chow Chows have either thick, harsh coats, which give them a cuddly look and form a ruff around the shoulders and neck, or, less commonly, smooth coats.  They have well-proportioned heads and small, apparently scowling faces--this is caused by the slightly wrinkled forehead and pads of skin at the inner corner of each eye.  A broad, short muzzle ends in a black nose.  Small, rounded ears sit high on the head, and the compact body gives way to a thick tail, which is carried over the back.
