Maltese

The Maltese originated almost 3,000 years ago on the Mediterranean island of Malta, where this breed's isolation has led to a fabulous canine specimen.  They are striking dogs with big characters and gregarious natures.  They enjoy daily indoor romps and a short walk on a leash, but they are not great outdoor dogs.

Temperament

Maltese are good-tempered pets, but they are inclined to be irritable with small children with a trusting, lively nature.

Appearance

When trotting along, this diminutive breed looks like it is floating on air, as the Maltese is covered in long, flat, silky hair that hangs to the ground.  The coat color is white, with a hint of gray or lemon.  Grooming care can be time consuming, involving combing every one to two days.  Also, the white hair may be difficult to keep clean.
